Day 1 - 8th March. Arundel to Cocking - 13.7 miles

With this predicted to be the coldest day since 2010 and with even a prospect of snow as far South as the South Downs, today's walk was promising to be wet and cold..






Yes, I know!!!! I'd like one as well, but parking it on Maltravers would be a pickle!!!




Everyone else must have heeded the weather warning because with the exception of a solitary dog walker as we left Arundel we saw no other living soul all day.....

....apart from a few dozen mystified sheep, deep in the mist above Gumber Farm.






By 4:30pm we were warmly ensconced at The Blue Bell at Cocking with a pint of 


.....Very drinkable too!!!

The BlueBell is a 'community pub' where Sharon the landlady is half Sicilian, Half Maltese, half Irish.......!!!! 

Supper was good and the radiators stayed hot all night so we were able to dry our boots and clothes in readiness for tomorrow.

All good!

By this morning, I was still hobbling a bit, so decided it was time for a break. With another planned day off tomorrow in Poole I decided to make the most of it and see if I could get my boots reheeled as well. 9th March - Cocking to Buriton - 11.9 miles

One of the problems with finding accommodation on the South Downs Way is that the trail generally follows a high level route whereas all the local towns, villages and accommodation are off the trail and at lower altitude. So, the end of each day is marked by a descent to find the accommodation and the start of each day involves a steepish climb to get back on the trail. And so it is with Cocking! We'd been told over breakfast about a local sculptor, Phillip Jackson - famous for his sculptures of QE2 and the Queen Mother. As we left the hotel, the rain was already tipping down so we deferred the steep climb out the village for 10 minutes by walking into the churchyard and peering over the wall into a lovely garden in which the sculptor displays some of his works. March 20th - Studland to Lulworth - 8.7 miles

Having initially (and naively) intended to walk to the chain ferry from Poole, I'd by now thought twice about it and had sussed out that the bus station was close to the hotel, that the No.60 went all the way down the Sandbacks peninsula and would deliver me to the ferry. I arrived at the ferry terminal in good time to appreciate the technology and watch the approaching ferry. That's when  ..... Satan stepped forward and I realised that the same bus-stop served the No.50 which could take me all the way from the ferry to Studland.  Get behind me Satan!!!! So, I eagerly joined a group of other walkers already on the No.50 and onto the ferry and in to the driving rain we went - all of us on the top deck, complete with heavy condensation on the windows.  The only clear view was out of the back window - so I appreciated the view as we pulled away from the slip.
