12th March - Winchester

Breakfast at a rather 'quirky' B&B owned by the grandson of Alliott Verdon Roe, an early pioneer of 'flying machines' and founder of the Avro company that built the Lancaster.
Then a walk over to The Great Hall
to see King Arthur's Round Table - apparently repainted under Henry VIII's instruction to feature a portrait of himself.
After a good coffee, the High St beckoned through the West gate

and then a walk around the Cathedral
with its amazing Gathic vaulted ceiling
and West window reglazed with remnants of shattered glass following the English Civil War.
A very interesting exhibition of the DNA and archaeological analysis of 'royal' bones from the 'Mortuary Chests' including those of  Queen Emma who very cleverly became Queen of the English, Danes and Norwegians by first marrying Aethelred the Unready and later Cnut. She must have been some woman!!!
By then, it had to be time for a soup lunch in the Cathedral cafe followed by some Guiness watching the Scotland Ireland match. A nothing if not varied day!!
